"YOU'RE BACK IN THE ROOM" - RHYL HYPNOTHERAPIST ASKS ARE THE CONTESTANTS REALLY HYPNOTISED?

"YOU'RE BACK IN THE ROOM" HYPNOSIS SHOW - REAL OR FAKE?

As a hypnotherapist, I am often asked whether the contestants in "You're Back in the Room" are really hypnotised.

If you haven't seen the show, a team of hypnotised contestants work together to complete various tasks and claim a share of the £25,000 prize, whilst at the same time “sabotaging” their own efforts by responding to suggestions from the hypnotist that they will do crazy things along the way.  This makes for great entertainment, but may be giving the wrong perception of the impressive psychological tool known as “trance” or “hypnosis”.

A state of trance is in fact a state of heightened awareness, or focus, which is much easier to achieve and maintain when someone is guiding you.

When you are being encouraged to get into a particular state of mind, or “zone”, you will perform better. Whether that is imagining having a happy life without cigarettes, or pretending that you’re Elvis Presley – that’s what differentiates hypnotherapy from stage hypnosis.  With hypnotherapy you’re applying that state of focus to improving your life, whereas with stage hypnosis you’re applying the state to make role playing more realistic.
Stage hypnosis is basically directed 'method' acting!

So are the contestants really hypnotised?

In my professional opinion, "Yes", in that they are highly focused and therefore able to comply with the tasks suggested to them, but also "No" in that they are not being “controlled” against their will.

Hypnosis is focus – and, let’s face it, £25,000 will certainly keep you focused!
